House buying advice concerning myself and my gliders.

Posted by: Moriko
-----
I'm really thinking about buying a house, not only for my own personal gain in comfort and such, but also for my gliders.

Here's the quick low-down of my situation:

I'm in a overpriced and very, very small apartment that has no dish washer, washing machine, or dryer. Basically, it's many people's nightmare. The only real reason I am living here is because the location is so close to my University that I can simply walk to my classes. Oh yeah, don't forget that I'm super afraid of even trying to pay for a house or the complications of buying or anything that deals with house ownership.

I guess that's where this post is going.. house ownership advice. I would really like to buy my own place so I can do the things I want and have the luxury of not having to go to a friend's house to wash my clothes(sorry mom, I can't talk about you on the internet, it's embarrassing), or finally be able to not see a pile of dishes in the sink and dread to spend the next 10 to 15 minutes washing them to sparkly perfection.

What should I expect during my adventure to look for a house? Any surprises? Should I wait, or jump into the debt-filled life in exchange for happiness? Am I going to pay more than I expected? Please feed off of your first home-buying experience so I can be ready for mine.

Glider notes (cycle, pregnant, visable stages)

JUNE 22 Brought Spike and Lola home June 22nd (possibly the 15th, but I think the 22nd)
She was separated from her 2 joeys when re-homed with me. Previous
owner said she may be with joey)

JUNE 30 First cycle while with me. Lola in heat, Spike
"interested", heard mating hissy noise for several days.

JULY 14th Starting to wonder about a sometimes visible
"bulge" on ONE SIDE of pouch. Took to vet for well check up and
neuter Spike questions. Seems maybe previous owner was right about having joeys in pouch?

JULY 23 The bulge in pouch is bigger and seems to move -
I'm convinced there are joey's in pouch. (Vet wants to wait for
2 months before neutering Spike)

JULY 25th Ok - that bulge is moving in a big way - joeys definitely in
pouch!

JULY 26th Lola is in heat again. Caught Spike tying to
breed :-(

JULY 27th For the last few days Lola has been stopping/freezing, arching and lifting bottom. Alot of stretch leg and arm and standing with back leg kind of out to side. I think the joey is big enough to bother her, or maybe nursing something with teeth now?

***Now that the cycle is seen, apparently around the 28th - 30th of each month, I'm hoping an experienced breeder can look over these notes and get a good handle on how far along these joeys are IP and just when they are due to make an appearance. My guess is that from delivery to IP at day 16ish - that would only be about 2 weeks from the last heat cycle at the end of June. Seems like a very short time. Maybe this joey is from the heat cycle while with the previous owner, which would make the mating date the end of May and the joey IP now for about 6 1/2 weeks? Wondering if that sounds right?***

AUGUST 13th Lola's pouch was 'open'. I couldn't see anything inside (I'm figuring that because there is only 1 joey, there is more room and he's less apt to "stick out". For several days she's been walking and standing with her legs kind of spread, and doing alot of opening the pouch and "looking in". We must be getting close!

AUGUST 16th I SAW BABY BUTT !!!! I saw what looked like the joey rolling over and a little butt poked out for a split second :-)

AUGUST 19th He (or she) is OPP! And what a voice it has, wow! Mom and dad won't get out of the way long enough to hold it or get a picture yet. But it looks like the body is about the size of a girls thumb. lol

 Just Making Sure

Hello. I recently adopted a male suggie. I already had a female. Well I keep them in seperate cages due to the fact that the female came from an abusive situation and didn't know how she would react to a new roommate. Even so the cages are kept close together. Ok, here's my thing. The male makes almost an "insect" sound sometimes and I wondered if he's in heat. Now she's making the sound. So, what does that sound mean? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 HELP?! Playful or aggressive?

I recently bought two gliders to be cage mates with Echo my glider who had cage mates before in a previous home. Their owner told me they crabbed at each other even though bonded. They run around seemingly in a playful manner like tag. But they often crab at Echo though each other as well. Sometimes they swipe a paw while running like tagging and run the other way. They don't always crab. Should I be worried or is it playing?

Lost a boy today - RIP Spritz SugarShack

Posted by: kazko
-----
I got home from a roadtrip Sunday night. A capable family member had been feeding the zoo for me for a few days without incident. This probably isnt related to the dead boy I found this morning in my cage of 8; yes, the extremely super tame and adorable colony. The cage has been smelling "shrimpy" for a day or two since I have been home. I did feed shrimp the night I got home so I ignored it until this morning when I decided to do a head count and check the bag. There I found one of the offspring boys. I believe it was Spritz from Momma Cookie as the remaining boy is smaller in size which fits with him being younger.

I am unable to see any battle scars on anyone else and all seems fine except for that. It is possible that a fight broke out over food or such and the younger one lost. Being found in the bag suggests that he had a wound and then the colony probably began grooming on him to see him to his death. I suspect this all happened late at night to where nobody was around to intervene. Of course what I found is as sad a sight as you can imagine. It is one of the frightening things to come to know what these animals that we call our pets can do to their own.

So with that sad thought I'll bid beautiful little Spritz a farewell and rest in peace with no idea why he had to leave us. He was almost 4. The Sugar Shack wont be the same without him.

Sigh...

 My glider Gizzy.

Posted by: CiaraN816
-----
I just recently purchased him about 3 days ago. The previous owner had to give him up because his apartment doesn't allow sugar gliders and the land lord found out.

He has a few bad habits though.
He came with a runner ball to he can run around on the floor, and the previous owners made that his "safe place" instead of a pocket or pouch. As a result he DOES NOT like being handled by hand. When ever he would bite them, they would put him back in his cage.

So he bites and doesn't like hands :/
BUT I will not give up on him, I have planned to break these habits and bond with the little guy.
I can tell he isn't mean, he is just misunderstood.

He is getting a mate tomorrow :D
So maybe he will come out of his shell more (after the introduction of course)
I'm driving an hour away to pick the little girl up.

Any one have any tips to help with Gizzy's bad habits?

 Introductions

About a year ago I got my 1st sugarglider Pete from a family that was no longer able to care for him (after much research of course). When I went to pick him up, the previous owners were poking at him untill he woke up and yelled at them, they then gave me a paper explaining his diet, the big thing that stuck out to me was that he "refused" to drink water, he also seemed to refuse eat on the diet he was on, so I did some more research about different diets. He wasn't on a pellet diet so I decided tried the PPP pellet diet and got a cage through them, since then he has gone through a complete 180 change. The only thing is he hasn't completly bonded, but we are slowly getting there, he will eat out of hands let us pet him, but he won't let us hold him, but I know it will take time to trust us after his pervious home.

I know I'm probably going to get some hate for using a pellet diet and PPP's at that, but he is eating and thriving, that's all I care about.

 Kailee's Game

Posted by: jamers113

Kailee has started a new game pulling things with tail she loves to take straws off rope now has started carrying rope with tail . I always said her tail has its own mind. somtimes she looks like a snake charmer with her tail. Now she uses it to carry things, even carried a plastic annimal back to pouch with tail. (it was almost round about the size of a large grape)
