Alright so I CAN NOT find another vet in OKC that treats sugar gliders. I have the number to the vet that the people who I got my gliders from gave me...The only problem with this vet is they told me they do not have an emergency number and you must make an appointment. Thats all fine and dandy for wellness exams but I NEED to have an emergency number on hand. You never know what will happen!! I tried google and yellowpages.com but maybe I'm just typing in the wrong thing ( I suck at searching the web ) Does anyone know how I can find an emergency vet to treat suggies in the Oklahoma City area??

THANKS!

PS There is nothing wrong with my babies right now, just want an emergency number in case anything ever happens.

You should just ask them for a list of ER vets that treat exotics and then just call those places yourself and ask if they treat gliders. Of course they have to know of an emergency place! You're in a good size city too! I'm not sure where else to look...maybe call your local shelter and ask them who they use for emergencies?

Is this one on your list?

Dr. Harry Traylor
122 & N. Penn
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

There wasn't a phone number listed..I'll see if I can find it.

edited to add link:

http://www.yellowbot.com/browse/veterinarian/Oklahoma%20City,%20OK/page8.html

Surely someone on this list is or know an emergency vet I would hope. LOL

Looks like the address listed for Dr. Traylor is different on the link above but there is a phone number there. If you find one, be sure to add it to our database!

He is not on my list but I will check it out! Thanks! I think tomorrow I will call the vet I talked to earlier and see if they know of any emergency vets that care for exotics. If not I guess I will open the phone book and go down the line until someone can recommend an emergency vet for me!! Boy will that be fun. I don't think I've opened a phone book in like 5 years!

Tisha - I wish more glider owners were responsible enough to locate an emergency vet BEFORE it's a critical emergency. Sadly, so many don't even find an exotic vet at all until their glider is already sick. And we know from experience here, that by the time a glider is noticeably sick, it's reeeeaaallly sick.

You're such a good glider mama!!

Tisha,

You might try Neel's Vet on 23rd and MacArthur. I know that they are a 24 hour vet clinic and see a variety of animals. I had to take my pomeranian in the middle of the night once and they were able to see him right away. I haven't been able to give them a call to see if they consult exotic pets (I too am trying to find a clinic that's nearby in case of emergencies for my little suggie, Maui) so if you are able to give them a call before I do, or if you find a nearby facility, please let me know. If vice-versa I'll be sure to post it. Good Luck!

Thanks budsprout! Yes I know of Neel, I'm not very fond of them...I had a yorkie puppy that got sick a week after I got him. It was strange that he got sick a few days after I gave him flea medicine. I had to take him to Neel really late one night because he was so sick. I told them about the medicine and how he was just fine before that but they told me there was no way that the two were connected. They racked up over $300 in tests and still had "no idea" what was wrong. They sent us home and 20 minutes after getting him home, he died in our bed. I was devastated and very mad that I just spent that much and they couldn't tell me what was wrong. I've had other bad experiences with them in the past as well. I don't know if they treat exotics or not but I'd REALLY like to find someone OTHER than them. lol Good Luck, I'll let you know if I can find anything out!

Oh and welcome to the forums.

Oh Dear! Good thing I haven't called them yet! I'll reconsider taking little Doug. there again. I would have been so upset! Pets become members of the family and it's just devistating when a tragedy like that happens. I'm so sorry about your puppy
The individual that I bought Maui from gave me a number for a vet but they are out in Edmond. If you would like I will post it when I get home (I've got the info next to Maui's cage in case there is ever an emergency). If you find out anything from another facility would you mind posting it? Sorry to sound like such a bum but the more numbers I can get the better my chances of finding a good facility (anything sounds better than Neel's now!).
Oh, and thanks for the welcome. I've been reading this site for months but have been a bit of a weenie about posting. It's great to know that there is another suggie mommie practically right around the corner!

Unfortunately Stillwater is not near Oklahoma City, it is an hour away so it doesn't help me! :( BUT it may help someone!!

Budsprout, I have a name/number for a vet on the south side but it's also at home (next to my cage). The only problem with this vet, like I said above, is that they have no emergency hours. I will post their name and number for you later tonight. You have to have an appointment and stuff, but atleast it's a vet to have on hand for wellness exams.

We'll keep searching for an emergency vet!!!

(Oh yeah and I'm sure Neel Vet did not intensionally hurt my puppy but they seemed more concerned about running every test known to man and telling me that the flea medicine could not possibly have been the problem, instead of actually trying to help....Maybe I just have bad luck with them.)

Budsprout, I had a second while I'm sitting here at work to go ahead and call Neel vet and ask them about their experience with sugargliders (just incase it's the only place open 24 hours). The receptionist I talked to said that they do have a few vets that treat "exotics" but she could not say for certain how many sugar gliders they have seen (she would have to ask the vet). She did say that the vets that treat exotics are not there ALL the time. I asked if she could tell me any other vets that have experience in sugar gliders that have an emergency number. She took my name and number and said she will ask the vets there to see if they have a recommendation.

Hopefully she will call me back...They will be on my list only as a last resort. Also like I said she couldn't say how much experience with sugar gliders they have had, I would have to ask the vet myself, but they do see exotics. Thats all I have time to do right now, I have to pack up and head to school to figure out some financial aid crap. When I get home tonight I will try to call some more places and maybe hear back from Neel by then. I'll let you know!

Hi Tisha,
Sorry I didn't reply last night. I got a surprise visit from the in-laws

I checked out the vet that Kyro mentioned earlier (Thanks Kyro!). They were also referred by another vet that I had checked out so they sound pretty good. They are North Penn Veterinary Hospital on 122nd and Penn., phone#: 752-0131. Their hours are M-F, 7:30-6:00 and charge $46.50 for routine checks. I spoke with their receptionist and I was told that the vet has had experience with exotics, includding suggies for almost 20yrs. Although they aren't available for late night emergencies or on weekends they sounded like a good place for the routine check ups. I hope this helps!

I forgot to post about that one vet I know of on southside...they are a little cheaper for routine check ups (atleast if you have more than one glider) I can't remember the exact pricing (written down at home) It's like $27 per glider if you have more than one. If you only have one then they charge more. I will get the info tonight I promise.

The one on Penn sounds good though!! But more expensive.

Still no emergency vet huh?! Looks like Neel may be our only option for emergencies. When theca receptionist lled me back she said there is another 24 hr vet in tulsa but thats too far for me if there is an emergency!!! (Not sure where you are located but I'm on the north side of OKC)

Yikes, I bet! Well, I have 2 vets that I know of right now that are within less than 30 minutes from me who will treat sugar gliders but they don't have an emergency number. The only CLOSE 24 hour vet is the one i've had a bad experience with in the past but...I may have to use them if anything ever happens!! I couldn't see driving an hour when I have an emergency..

Ok here is the one on the south side:

Brookwood Animal Clinic
433 SW 89th St
Okc, OK 73139

405-634-7799

Hrs M-F 8-6 Sat 8-12

Office visit is $37 for one glider or $28 per glider if you have more than one

Fecal test is $20

They are located on 89th and Walker. I will try to add them to the vet resources page here on the site.

I don't know if they are closer to you than the one on 122nd but this one is a little cheaper. Again, must have an appointment and no emergency number.
