If you do not have a Trader Joes nearby you can use the Arnold's Choice Possum Milk Replacer:
www.sugar-gliders.com/possum-milk-replacer.htm

The fly pupae is low in fat but high in protein. What is replaces is the use of many more eggs.

There are all kinds of protein sources in this diet. It is balanced out to get a broad range of nutrients. For example, there is protein in the yogurt, egg, fly pupae, honey, bee pollen, protein poweder.

Ok Ed: I finnally took a day and made it.

It was a very dramatic and messy first batch, but I think It will be easier next time sence I already have all the pupae and bee pollen powdered. I also had enough orange juice for three more batches, and enough papaya juice for one more.

I'm watching my grandparents house for the week, so razzle's cage is in a new environment. I'm going to wait two weeks to get a good assesment of how he is doing with eating the new diet.

I'll get pictures of the mess I made up when I get back to my house.
Thanks again for all your help. It makes me feel so good knowing he's eating healthy.

I am wondering if feeding mealworms can substitute the fly pupae? My gliders go nuts over their mealies. I've been feeding them about 7 per day each. If not what else can I use that i could possibly get locally without ordering online?
Also is there a link for the best F+V plan to go with the LGRS version of HPW?

I am still trying to decide whether to switch from BML to HPW. I feel my head is swimming in so much info and I am not sure where to look for an all-around concise lay it all out for me so I don't screw up diet plan. Whew can you tell im treading water? lol

BTW- yes I am a newbie to gliders (about a month)

Thank you

No mealworms don't have near the nutritional content and are very fatty. They should only be used as treats. Unfortunately, there is no really easy diet plan for them. If you follow HPW, BML or even LGRS Suggie Soup, those are created to be followed pretty much as created. That makes it pretty easy in itself.

I agree with Kylah on the subject of mealworms. In developing the LGRS suggie soup recipe we in fact considered mealworms. But dehydrated fly pupae is much higher in protein and at the same time much lower in fat than mealworms

Mealworms are ok as a treat but if you feed them seven at a time they are filling up on fat and phosphorus and may not have the appetite to eat a well-balanced meal.

wow! Only lasting two weeks seems crazy to me, i can't beleive you make a batch every day

Razzle has been on the "soup" for a week now. I am going to wait another week before I assess him real good. You see I've been house sitting my grandmother's house for the last week, and I can tell it really effected him. I took his cage with us, and he got his own room. But, he didn't get to have his glider proofed room every night and their were little dogs barking ALL night, EVERY night. So I wan't to see how he's doing after two weeks.

You may wish to take a few photos now as a "before" and then do them once a month.

Based on the observations we have made on incoming rescues who are malnourished, it takes a good two months for them to "fatten up" on this recipe. It takes six months to a year for their fur to go from dull, coppery/brown splotches to smooth, shiny grey.

i have read thru most all of this,& I'm excited, pumped up!!!!
i have acacia powder, also. where can i put that in? should it be mixed w/the fruit & veggies? i do hope that all these fruit & veggie concoctions will stay here,so i can pull them up whenever i need to make more,so they can have a variety of different foods.
this is just too perfect!!! i would pay to have an actual 'cook' book of all this,by golly!!!!

You don't need to add the acacia powder to the soup, but sure you can sprinkle a little bit on the food. Not too much though because it can create a real gooey mess. Acacia gum is high in energy owing to the glucose, sucrose and complex polysaccharides in the sap. They like the taste of it. A pinch or two on their veggies and fruits is fine. Go to the resources/nutrition tab here to look at published relishes and smoothies that have the proper ratios. you can also create your own recipes.

You can put the dehydrated pupae in the blender. Mine winds up looking like flecks of pepper so it isn't powder fine, but it still works.

Anyone contemplating switching to this diet.... go for it! I did and I love it. I feel good knowing that my little boy is eating a diet that closely resembles what he would in the wild.

ADVICE
#1 your first batch will be messy, and it will be time consuming! But, it makes it easier for following batch I promise.

#2 Before you do anything... grind up the fly pupae and the bee pollen, it will help in the long run. Then next time you can simply measure out your table spoons and go from there. (Alot of people have great luck with a majic bullet)
#3 Make sure your papaya is RIPE; it has a good amount of give to it. Before you juice it, OR make it easy on your self and go buy jarred papays juice like this kind.

#4 invest in some good freezer containers so you can save the juices and powders for next batches safely

#5 My favorite glider "tool" are the little plastic container you see in the previous picture. I put two table spoons of SOUP in each container; then at night all I have to do is pull one out of the freezer, run some warm water over it and pop the soup in his bowl. I do the same thing with Dahlila2020's fruit smoothies and veggie relishes; it makes daily feeding quit simple.

I hope this advice helps someone successfully provide their gliders with this great diet

******ED; THANK YOU AGAIN, YOU ARE TRUELY A CARING PERSON AND I HAVE THE UTMOST RESPECT FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE*****

I love the photos Hannah2010! You are very kind. We learned a lot about building this diet by talking to people here, using the recipe calculator here, citing marsupial nutrition texts and field studies, and working with our vet. If we had the money, we would do more scientific research on it like the pet food companies do, but based on the nutritional analysis and the observations we have made in the general health of the gliders, we think we are pretty close to optimal. The more we learn, we will make changes to the "published" diet over time. We have changed it three times in as many years and have updated everyone.

one tip we think may be useful... don't fill the blender all the way up to the top but only 3/4 of the way or else you will make a big mess :-)

If I ever hit the lotery or become rich I'm sending money your way. I think what you do is amazing!

You should read the post I made about Sugar glider calanders and cookbooks. If you guys could produce one, it may be a way to generate money for more research.

I'm still young (only 17 ) but I think people would be willing to add a few bucks to the price as a donation.

Talk to Anne Blancard at Oregon Feeder Insects and ask her if there is a cheaper way to ship the product. Maybe she can help you with that.

Josefine, shipping was free for me. I didn't even ask for free shipping. They just billed me that way. Its not a heavy package, i think thats why the dehydrated fly pupae shipping is free.

And, if your husband is worried let him know that is will last you well over a year!! I think its a great deal.
