I have two gliders about 7 months old. They are brother and sister, so I don't want them to mate. Originally I thought perhaps I will trade the male later, but now I'm too attached to both of them.

I live in the Woodbridge/Manassas Northern Virginia area. Does anyone know of a reputable, inexpensive location to neuter my male. And NO, I'm not willing to do it myself. I read about that online, but couldn't do it. I love my little "kritters" :).

No one reputable would EVER do it themselves. I'm surprised they have not mated yet. Does he have his bald spot? If so, he's sexually mature and fully capable of reproducing.

Why anyone, who isn't an exotic vet, would try and neuter there suggie is beyond me!? That would be like, "Hey, here is your newborn son, and here is your do-it-yourself at home circumcision kit."

My exotic emergency vet is in Alexandria. As for cheap though, both my exotic vets here in Gaithersburg charged me $250 a boy. I think that is pretty standard in the area. I went to a glider meet yesterday near Baltimore and all the owners and breeders stated similar prices .
And take this as you will, but your female is way too young to be a mother, so you may want to separate them asap until his surgery. If she gets pregnant there may be issues with her heath and that of the babies.

I agree they should be separated until he is neutered. I, too, am surprised they havent mated yet. And you want to keep them separated for 30 days after the neuter to make sure.

Neutered males can STILL mate - but they cant reproduce. So dont be surprised if you see them mating afterwards. Believe us when we say he wont care that it's his sister...

Anything to do with exotic animals is never inexpensive. Gliders are not inexpensive pets to have... Hopefully, the vet recommended to you will work out.

Good Lord, I really don't want to know where you found the "do-it-yourself" bulls*%& online... that's just scary. Yeah, I've heard of mill breeders at fairs and flea markets doing that kind of crap, but I didn't know that the information on how to do it was online and endorsed by someone. OMG...

Thanks everyone for your info and advise. Ok, I guess $250 it is; must be the area here as that is pretty much what I was quoted as well by the vets I called. I was just told that I could expect to pay between $100-$150 so I thought I must have just been calling the most expensive vets or something.

My male does not have the bald spot yet. Looks like it is getting there though. I also read that about 16 months old is the best time to neuter them, so I have a while. If I seperate them now, won't that be really lonley for them? I do have another cage, so should I just put them close to each other or would that make it worse for them?

i dont think its 16 months maybe 16 weeks? someone on here will know when they can be fixed but i think he maybe be able to get fixed now (not sure though) that is just the price in your area some areas are able to get it cheaper then others. and thanks for not doing it yourself and for not separating them to get another female.

tgortva, when i was looking for a vet to neuter our four boys, I checked with SEAVS(Stahl Exotic Animal Vet.) in Fairfax. They quoted $252.00 each and that was the snip and stitch neuter. I did locate a vet down the road from my home that did laser surgery and that is what I wanted for them. The whole amount for the four was around $265.00 (have to go find the copy of the bill to be sure) and that is where I ended up going but the price was a deal for doing multiples gliders at once. I have heard good things about SEAVS but not used them.
