As we sat in the vets office today we met a nice couple who's dog was in for an eye exam. I shared that we have sugar glider and they told me their story.

They had a couple of gliders, cats & dogs. They housed the gliders in a very large cage. They came home one day to the cage knocked over and gliders gone. They believe their dog knocked the cage down to get to the gliders. Which it sounds like he got them. They also loved their gliders and didn't think they had any concerns when they left the house and gliders cage was not protected from the dog. BTW this was not a large dog, just determined.

Good post, Brenda!

This is why I have a baby gate on the bedroom door. The only interest my dogs have ever shown in the gliders was to scour around and on their cage sniffing for glider food. They could easily knock over the cage trying to get at scraps of food.

The above only happened a time or two before I realized there was potential for danger.

Thought it would be good to have a few of these stories all in the same place so we can bookmark it for future reference.

Good idea, Kylah!

And thanks for the story Brenda. I will use this post in the future when someone asks why they can't let their sugar glider and dog share a room or something alon those lines.

Just bumping this as there have been an unusual number of people posting about near misses, accidents and deaths by household pets. Here are other threads about gliders vs. pets:
