I think I've read the entire site now, lol but thanks for posting this Rita. I think sometimes new people get overwhelmed on a new forum when trying to find answers.

You are welcome, PW. Im trying to get as much medical information on here as possible. Then put the link into Gliderpedia. Most of what is here has already been added to Gliderpedia but for some reason, new people would rather read it on the forum than go there.

This post needs some cleaning up but the articles and links here are true and verified.

According to Eric, the statics are many more unregistered people actually come here to read the Gliderpedia than those who actually post on the forums. It appears the Gliderpedia has the most hits on this site. So we have to keep it correct and current.

SNAP TEST FOR GIARDIA

As you all know, I always preach about the importance of having fecals done - both float and smear. Now, we may want to add the SNAP test to that list as it is the best way to detect giardia cysts which are not always detectable in the float and smear if the giardia is not "shedding".

Here is a video which explains giardia and how the SNAP test works. It is shown on a dog, but giardia is giardia - no matter who the host is:

STORING BEE POLLEN AND HIGH PROTEIN WOMBAROO (HPW)

Just a reminder for those of you who use bee pollen and high protein wombaroo powder.

The shelf life of bee pollen kept in a cupboard is 6 months. If kept in the refrigerator - 1 year. If kept in the freezer - 2 years.

The shelf life of High Protein Wombaroo (HPW) powder should be listed on your package. The shelf life listed is for an "unopened" package, so after it has been opened that date is probably not valid.

I keep both my HPW powder and bee pollen in a tupperware container in the refrigerator.

Eric and I have discussed this more than once and have decided not to make this a sticky. There is more traffic from non-members and more traffic to Giderpedia than there are on the forum. Most of the topics in this post are also in Gliderpedia but if we made it a sticky, there would be to many people that would never see it.

My recommendation is to bookmark it for future use. I will continue to update this post as new things come up - and am also updating Gliderpedia at the same time.

Feel free to bump it at anytime.

Very good post.

I highly reccomend Bookmarking it too, or even printing out the various posts just in case your internet is out and you need some of this information.

I also reccomend putting the animal poison control on your fridge or any place you put emergency numbers--I to have had to use it before and they are so helpful. And you will be glad you have that number right by the phone! Or even in your phone!

IF YOUR GLIDERS EATS CHOCOLATE

CHOCOLATE TOXICITY

I would suggest you call your vet and have them on "alert".

Here are some things I found regarding chocolate toxicity:

What are the signs of toxicity?
Signs are most commonly seen within 12 hours (or less) of chocolate ingestion.

* Excitement / nervousness / trembling
* Vomiting / diarrhea
* Excessive thirst / sometimes excessive urination (at higher levels of Theobromine toxicity)
* Muscle spasms
* Seizures
* Coma (rare
* Death (rare) -- likely due to heart rhythm abnormalities.

How is chocolate toxicity treated?
If you suspect that your pet has eaten chocolate , call your veterinarian for advice. The toxicity of Theobromine is dose dependent. This means that the size of your pet, the type of chocolate, and quantity of chocolate determine if or how toxic it is for your pet.

There is no specific antidote for Theobromine toxicity. Medical treatmentis supportive, and may include all or some of the following:

* IV fluids - to prevent dehydration from vomiting, diarrhea, and /or increased urination, and to "flush" the Theobromine out of the system.
* Emetics - medications that induce vomiting. Used when the ingestion of chocolate is within 4 hours. Up to 6-8 hours post chocolate ingestion may be effective.
* Activated charcoal - for ingestion greater than 4 hours prior to treatment, or for patients that show continued signs of toxicity.
* Anti-seizure medications - for patients having seizures and/or muscle tremors.
* Cardiac medications - for patients exhibiting irregular heart rates or rhythms.

Some other things I have for emergency purposes are:

Vet cage. This is a small cage used to take the suggies to the Vet, The measurements are 12" H x 12" W x 6" D. I also have a small, clean water bottle in a baggie that goes with it. It has a handle on the top for easy handling.

Hospital/Evacuation Cage. Again, this is a small cage which is used to quarantine a new suggie or house a sick one. It can also easily fit into the back of my Explorer. The measurements are: 24" H x 18" L x 18" D. It also has a handle on the top for easy handling. It also has a water bottle in a baggie inside it. (this might be the place to store any evacuation items.)

Magnifying Glasses. Because suggies are so small and I am old. This helps with nail clipping and seeing anything on them that I cant with a naked eye.

Iodine. A wound disinfectant and cleanser.

Hand Sanitizer. Self-explanatory

Travel Syringes. These are needle-less syringes that are in a plastic container with cap.

Suz's Video on How to do a Dehydration Test. (This glider is not dehydrated - notice how the skin goes back down immediately. If the glider is dehydrated - the skin goes down very slowly)
