So about a year ago, my little guy broke out of his cage (still dont know how it was done) and got into a bad scuffle with the cat. She is usually really good with critters...she was raised round my hamsters. Well anywho, my cinnamon got beat up pretty bad and ever since then both my gliders have had a thing for tormenting my cat. They go to the bottom of the cage and try to get her to come over, then they leap at the bars and scare her. NOw what ive noticed is they actually reach through the cage bars and pull the cats fur out when she is close enough to the cage. they also bark when she is around too..And the best parts is when the gliders are having their out of cage time, they either chase the cat or jump on her and jump off really quick..my poor cat is scared to death...Just a funny story I thought I would share...does anyone else have gliders that torment the other pets???

No. But then, I keep my gliders in a room that my cats aren't allowed.
I suggest that you do the same, as the cat could seriously injure the gliders.

You got real lucky the first time. You shouldn't let them play with your cat!

Please, keep them far away from each other. One cat bite can be deadly for your gliders. My cat will never see my gliders. She's a 15 year old blob and I would still NEVER chance it. Ever.

A cat's claws are generally a pretty good source of bacterial infection too. Even a small scratch could lead to infection. My father once spent three days in the hospital with blood poisoning from a cat scratch. Just Google "cat scratch fever disease" and see what you get. Please keep the cat away from the gliders, especially when they're out of the cage.

I have my gliders in the dining room..its the only room where there is enough room for the new cage. (6'x6'x8') and I dont keep my cat locked up at any time of the day. For some reason my cat is really strange to the gliders. She actually had a phantom pregnancy when I brought them home and tried to mother them. I dont know why she attacked my boy at the time, but she has never done anything since. Im not stupid enough to let the cat around ANY of my pets when Im not right there. asnd I was not trying to get criticized, just share a funny story. I have put in WAY more time and money into caring for my little critters than most people do for their dog or cat. An expmple..stayed home from classes/work to nurse and are for one of my hamsters who got sick and for bottle raising pinky sized hamsters/rodents. So, please dont patronize me and tell me I'm wrong, when you really have no idea about me except what is said on here. I'm not stupid.

Gliders and other animals is kind of a hot button issue. We "patronize" to make a point that it's not safe. Newcomers come here and see people bragging about how their cat/dog gets along with the gliders, and all the funny things that the gliders do with the cat, and they think it's okay. Then all of a sudden, snap, newbie's glider is gone. (I believe Ed has said there has been something like 5-8 glider deaths/injuries caused by other animals in just 2010, and we're not that far into 2010 yet...and that's just at his rescue!)

On GliderCentral awhile back, a member posted that a cat ("sweetest cat in the whole world", of course, "never did anything like this before!") managed to get to scratch a glider through the cage bars. That glider died of internal injuries, caused by the scratch.

My recommendation is to honestly find a way to keep the cat from the cage. Some people, from what I have heard, have done this by building a sort of cage around the cage. I find it easier to just keep my cage in a room with a closed door.... and accomplishing that was no easy task -- I had to rearrange a room, move a bookshelf and a desk out of there... Sucked, as I loved that bookshelf (which now is in my basement) but gliders safety is more important.

Sorry, I don't think it's funny and do not want ANYONE new coming here thinking it's OK for their pets to interact with their pets. It doesn't matter if I know you or not.

my gliders love to go after my cats yes its kinda funny but you should avoid it. my room is my animal's room so its hard to kick them out at night. but its also the only room in the house i can keep my gliders since i live with my parents. after reading winter's post im glad my cats are declawed i dont know what i would do if they were always in danger like that. and everyone is more concered about a new glider owner coming across this thread and going aww how cute and let their gliders jump on their other animals. your cats probably dont like to be tormented by the glider and will snap again one day. if it happened once it can happen again.
my cats usually run out of the room if the gliders are out. and when she is brave enough to stay in the room she is on the other side by the door or in her spot which is my lap. i wish i could have a room just for my gliders but i dont.
sorry if i repeat something or something doesnt make sense in my post. i havent been feeling well for days.

It is NEVER a good idea to mix gliders with other animals. Especially dogs and cats. For those of you who have cats in the same room as your gliders, you are playing with fire. Its only a matter of time before your glider is either injured or killed. Gliders think they are mighty mouse and they may be the ones to start something with the cats.

I agree, Kylah. I dont find this funny at all! We cant have new people coming here thinking its ok to mix species - it isnt ok - ever.

Although it is kinda cute that they seem to be wanting to 'get even', I'd be afraid to let a cat in the same room as my girls. I've brought my girls to work once, and that's because my girls were in the pouch around my neck all day (except from noon to two, when I put them in a travel cage in the bathroom) and the cat was in the other room with my boss, where she typically stays all day, laying on my boss' bed.

Shoot, I have my gliders' cage my my chinchillas cage in the same room, and they're at opposite ends JUST IN CASE.

I'm not trying to patronize you or anything, I just worry about gliders. I <3 them TONS!

We have an outdoor/indoor cat who is a daily hunter. He normally brings mice and birds and even the odd mole back to the house. But when my room mate and I had the gliders in the living room and were playing, the cat completely ignored them. I didn't want to risk them getting too close, but our cat made no movement towards them nor did he show any interest in the gliders on the couch.

I don't see anyone patronizing you. We're providing you and everyone else with solid information about the risks. Your very first statement tells us that the cat's already attacked one of your gliders ... and yet you think it's funny to repeatedly expose them to the same danger? A scratch or bite could happen in an instant, even if you're right there. We don't have to know you to know that, while you probably aren't stupid (and no one said that you are), you're doing a stupid thing. Nothing personal.

i keep my gliders cage away from the cat...but there are times with the cat sneeks into their room yes he has no intrest in them what so ever but what i did was wrap pet screening around the cage so the cat cant get to them and they cant get to the cat!

I also dont allow my cats in the same room as Jinx. Someone mentioned plassic that goes around cages to prevent the cat sratching through the bars i have also seen fleece covers that cover 3 of the 4 sides.

You know the saying, "better safe than sorry"?

Pretty sure it applies here.

Just saying. We aren't saying your stupid, we are saying your risk taking behaviour is stupid.

I don't know about you but I like playing or spending time with my gliders. I don't want to be sad because I did something stupid. Thats just my

Beyond the obvious physical danger, there is emotional stress to be considered. Gliders are prey animals and cats are predators. Those roles don't change simply because they are our pets. It is highly stressful for a glider to subjected to predators...this includes all predator animals. While some gliders aren't affected, there are those who are. I have had two gliders come to my rescue who were incredibly anxious due to the previous living situation with cats. Also, this is one of the myths put out their by mill breeders. They show pictures of cats and gliders eating together. It's simply not a good situation.

Yep. Ask any rescue or educational organization, like LGRS, Kingdom Cirtters, SuggieSavers, Sugar Group, etc. and you will find out that a lot of gliders come in single because their cage mates were killed or maimed by cats or dogs. It ain't cute at all. And every time someone posts an article on how cute it is or how it is possible to introduce them, etc. some yahoo does it and another glider is killed. And the greedy liar-devils we call mill breeders propagate these stupid practices because they don't care and just want to push out more gliders to ignorant people who can't think it through on their own. Very sad.
