So - my response to "painful mouthwash" was not necessarily in direct response to what you did, Ed. Although I'm glad that you used the alcohol-free kind. I always suspected you have a brain!

Dr.s and vets use alcohol based products every day.We use an alcohol product everyday,10x's a day to test blood sugar. It doesn't sting that long and evaporates quickly.

"It doesn't sting that long".. I wonder if you'd say that if you were the one with it on places that it really shouldn't go.

Also... just my opinion, but the whole "doctors and vets use alcohol based products!" line? ...irrelevant IMO. We are not doctors, or vets, here.

We are interested in doing more research on scent masking - perhaps event without getting gliders wet at all for special introductions.

We may be on to something with the suggestion people have made about vanilla. There are natural vanilla extracts that do not use alcohol. For example, Trader Joe's Cookbook Vanilla is alcohol-free

I have been doing more research on the overall idea of scent masking during animal introductions and I found an interesting article here:

http://ratguide.com/care/behavior/introducing_rats.php

DISCLAIMER: UMMM... RATS ARE NOT SUGAR GLIDERS. NOTED. JUST SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS SO LET'S STIPULATE THAT RATS ARE NOT GLIDERS. extract from the article above:

"Alleviating scent. In most situations reducing or masking the rats natural scent will make the introduction easier. Some people use a dab of an aromatic substance, such as vanilla extract, on the rats to mask their scent to each other. For introducing rats that are more territorial or in a group you can bathe them first using baby shampoo or scented suave such as peach or raspberry. When adding a rat to a group, bathe the new rat first. Add the resident rats one by one as you bathe and dry them making sure that you are close enough to supervise them. The kitchen counter is a good place for introductions when the bathing method is used. If the rats become agitated and you are seeing too much sniffing then open up a can of tuna and give them a bowl of it. Not only will the tuna distract them it will also mask their natural scent more effectively. You can even rub a little of the juice on them to ensure that they all smell the same."

Hmmm, maybe tuna and alcohol-free vanilla are the answer?

I definitly understand & am interesting in sent masking research as I can see that it could be helpful in improving the lives of solitary gliders.

And actually, using vanilla makes sence because it smells sweet. :D Possibly an instant love potion? lol, jk

Also something aromatic & yummy like tuna also makes sence. With many living creatures bonding over food is commonplace (especially humans & other colony/pack creatures).

Catman do you have sugar gliders if you do you are a calling the kettle black there arent you? I rescue I don't buy my gliders so they were bred here by someone else so should I let them go a fend for them selves after a life of captivity?
Sersiously why are you here since we are evil for even having a wild animal? unless I read your post wrong WHAT are you talking about??

Yeah, sounds like it to me too. Some people sound like they are here to just kick to can and make noise. Maybe he is the one today. We all have our times. I'm not attacking catman or anyone at all but I'm reading animosity from him pointed at a few members and it seems to be unfounded. Amy1706, yes I do have sugar gliders in cages and no that's not calling the kettle black! I'm trying to make a point. No one seems to think keeping a wild/exotic animal in a cage for its whole life is cruel, but get them wet or use a little mouthwash in a difficult, controlled situation 1 or 2 times and people flip out! And some of these people intentionally keep breeding animals to be kept in cages their whole life, small bird cages! Everyone knows that there are deadly dangers involved in breeding ,but that's just accepted to some as part of breeding. Maybe if the breeders also posted pictures and videos of all their failures(self mutilations, mating wounds, half eaten joeys, deformed joeys....), people would ask if it is really worth it. I rescue injured and sick animals all the time(that could be part of MY problem, desensitized)and I don't think I have ever had to rescue an animal because it just got wet or it found its way into a dumpster and got into some mouthwash.

now I am understanding what you ment better sorry I mis read your post I was confused and wrong my mistake I am just very angry that all of these people who are questioning Ed's judgement and what he did and are basicly bashing him for doing what he did I will defend Ed no matter what his heart IS in the right place and everyone who agrees with what he did has said(along with Ed) NO this is NOT for newbies that this is also a last resort when all other ways have failed. I have so much respect for Ed and what he does for the gliders. I'd trust him with my gliders anyday and If I myself was a glider I'd hope that he was my human.
