Its all about the stencil (and the placement of the stencil on the pumpkin) and using the longest yet skinniest (most important) blade. I use those cheap pumpkin carving kit blades and various stencils I find online. I really don't have much talent as I do not draw anything I carve. Though there is some creative genius happening when figuring which tiny piece to cut out before the next. Thanks guys! Also, I have never used false pumpkins, and the pumpkins I carve do not last a month either. Because they are incredibly thin, they desiccate (dry out) in a day or two. Most of these pumpkins take about 3 hrs to carve and trace. I feel pretty confident in saying anyone can do what I have done. Just have to be a little patient and take your time while sawing away! Happy Halloween!
*oh and the dead astronaut is pretty Jak O lantern ish (though you are correct, none is a pumpkin with a silly face. (borrring lol)
