The 2009 Glider Gossip Sugar Glider Christmas Ornament

Posted by: kazko
-----
I was not going to do a sugar glider Christmas ornament this year. Times are tough, money is tight and I hadnt found the time to pick some art and begin work on the transformation. But at the end of November some forum members started poking around for an ornament so I decided to work on one at the very last moment and we managed to get it out in short order.

The 2009 ornament can be seen here and can be purchased until early January. We only do a limited run for these things each year so you have to buy it now if you want it.

The 2008 ornament can be seen here . It was a success and a lot of fun to do. It was the very first time I ever tried to do a laser machine wood piece. There was a whole lot of back and forth and experimenting and waste involved but we learned a whole lot and brought all of that along to 2009 which we nailed with the very first data file and prototype.

It is not easy converting artwork into the vector format that a laser machine requires. Most digital images come in raster form and there is just no easy, quick or automated way of converting. There do exist some tools to do it for you but they all suck and just do not get the job done, so it gets done by hand. Essentially, the art is redrawn or traced referencing multiple layers so that the machine can follow the final map and know when to do a light etch, deep etch or a cut. The machines can even do a raster kind of output but I havent found a use for that yet. All of the raster we did last year just did not have the detail I was looking for in a quality ornament. Yet, it might be neat to try to overlay a photo onto something after it has been vector lased first.

Most of the laser etched items you find out there on the market now are from purchased clipart, are not detailed and are generally just cut, not etched. Our ornaments always have multiple layered details and I cant wait to keep experimenting with the machine to see what I can get out of it. With the right extensive multi-layered data set, the machines can practically do a smooth graduated curve or bump or pretty much any kind of 3D output from a flat piece of stock.

So then there is the logistical side of selling something like this. Each unit has to be presented somehow, protected, boxed, packaged and then shipped. The size of the ornament this year did not fit in a near-sized box by any means, so we had to compromise and go for a much larger standard sized one. The ornament then was very loose inside of the box so I had to come up with some way of protecting it. A custom greeting card did the trick. The ornament has a ribbon threaded through it and it is paperclipped to the inside of the card to keep it safe.

So after all of this effort, you get a neat and unique item and I'm happy that we can offer these things here for those that like to participate and help support the site.

Amazing discovery in my yard today

I was out in the yard today taking pictures of this years ornament against some natural settings; grass, leaves, bushes, vines and tree.

While doing a macro shot against the tree, I discovered something I have never seen before. Apparently my tree is hosting a vertical forest of micro mushrooms which are only revealed when looking very close.

They are amazingly beautiful and very very small.

Also, if you click on the very last photo below, I did a super macro zoom of the same area which revealed some amazing micro inhabitants of the forest.

 Mockingbird outside my window

Posted by: snusie

Sunday, 12/6/09, was a gloomy drizzly day. I was sitting in my room when I heard a commotion at the window. Looking around, I spotted a mockingbird on the windowsill.

He tapped on the glass, then fluttered up and back down.

I moved to get the camera, and he went to the cedar tree just outside the window. A few minutes later he was back. I took some pictures, then scared him off -- but he wouldn't stay away.

For close to an hour he was there, up and down, it looked like he was trying to come inside. What a beautiful bird.

Gizmo Glided for the First time!

The little stinker, he pulled a fast one on me and jumped from my arm to the top of his cage. After cat and mouse, he glided from the top! I was Stoked! Then I was worried about getting him back in, but then he just climbed up my leg and posed on my arm....like he was saying..."ok, I've had my fun for the day" I didn't think he loved and trusted me enough to run to me from out in the open like that! wow. He must really be starting to bond well now!

 Monarchs on my birthday

Posted by: kazko
-----
We have a few monarch butterflies around today. I stepped out and about eight of them flew around and landed on my head like to make a crown (I wish).

I found one to play nice and got some decent photos. I was also able to locate one fat monarch worm on the plant too. Earlier this year there were about six bugs to a bush but now only one as far as I can see.

It might freeze tonight so I figure they wont make it.

I thought this would never happen but my boyfriend got a job! After he was fired from his last one for missing too many days he could never find a place to hire him. But he came back, gave his old job (Same place I work now!) his doctors note, explaining he was sick and they asked him if he could start on the 14th!

So hopefully I'll have a little more money for x-mas this year and enough money to buy a whole new cageset and another cage for Tazz (And soon Toshi!) I can't wait for him to start working.... He's been out of work since March of this year and it's caused some serious financial stress in my household. But that will be all over and done with now ^.^

On another note, my landlords are driving me freakin nuts.... There son showed up at my house at THREE AM last night and didn't leave til I threatened to call the cops... They are mad that I've filed to the landlord tenant board for harassment and them not maitaining the apartment.

But all in all, life is okay..... I'm feeling much better now then I was....

 breeders in NY..

Posted by: judobabe

Ok, so my family and I are looking into getting a sugar glider and we live in NY, however; we cannot get ahold of any breeders in the albany area. Actually pretty much anywhere in NY. I read a journal entry where someone said something about this lady whose screen name was Senacasun, but i dont know how to get ahold of her.... HELP!!!!!!!
we have been researching a lot on Sugar Gliders and decided that we could take care of one properly and give it the proper attention... now to just find a breeder :)

I think they're starting to like me....

My house is constantly filled with people. Having 12 loud guys in my living room [by the glider cage] is a normal occurrence and the fuzzbutts have never minded.

Well tonight all these people started coming over so I put the gliders back in their cage [they were in their pouch in my shirt]. They started crabbing up a storm! I was like.. it can't be because of the noise. One of the guys was like "Well maybe it's cuz we smell bad" and I was like.. I have three sweaty men living in my house that can't be it either.

After about 15 min of them making "the loudest weirdest noise ever" [quote from a 6'2 250 pound man] I decided to put them back in my shirt. They immediately went to sleep. I'm thinking that means they're starting to like me.

 Blah....

I just need to rant right now.... I'm feeling really low.

I really miss my best friend and I've been feeling like no one will ever really love me. Like my knight is never coming.... I'm going to be eaten by the fire breathing dragon or locked in a castle for the rest of my life.

I am in a kinda there, kinda not relationship where I feel like it's a one way street. I go to work everyday at a job I hate, and on weekends I clean. It's hard enough to make friends and then when I do make them I feel terrible bringing them over to my house because it's a mess.

I feel like I'm constantly being pulled down and I just want to take my pets and my stuff and run away. I'm on antidepressants because I'm so messed up and I just don't know what to do anymore.

The girl I thought loved me, well lets just say I'm an idiot... and Rob, well he can't be bothered to get out of bed all day and scoop a litter box. Is there no one out there that is what I need them to be?

Sometimes, I don't know about love... 'cause right now, I really hurt and I just want to give up....
