lump in throat-- what is this

Yesterday while playing with Meeko I noticed his throat looked bigger. Not huge or anything but wider. Today however I noticed he has a pea sized lump in his throat! What could this be from? Im really worried.
He acts completely normal eating drinking and playing. I have made no changes to their diet and the only change in their lives has been the addition of the wodent wheel. Do you think its possible he injured himself in the wheel??

What should I do?

Does anyone have Val's number? I had it but lost it.. and do you think she could even help?

get him to the vet right away. my hedgie millie(R.I.P) got a little tumor on her jaw it was very sudden and i had not changed anything. it might be nothing but if it is a tumor or something like that its best to treat it before it gets bigger and worse.
val may know what it is but she cant really help you only a vet can help you. but maybe she can give you some advice on it before and after you find out what it is.
i hope hes ok.

oh forgot to add that she was acting normal and eating and drinking normally. it could have been a tooth abscess as well. but i couldnt afford to take her to the only hedgie vet around here. cause i had already spent over $200 trying to save my hedgie Baby. i dont want to even think about what she would have charged me for the visit and then get it removed and whatever else. i would have spent the money on her if i had it though.
dont think about it too much just get them to a vet ASAP and have fun playing with your gliders thats the best thing you can do for them right now. and maybe get your other glider looked at as well just in case.

Good Luck Janae,
I am praying for you and meeko that your luck gets better
I know how stressful this is, my dog did the same thing to me when she was a pup. We were at the vets once a month. Although with small animals like our little gliders, it is so much scary

Thank you so much. I will keep everyone posted. It is incredibly stressful because i love them so so much and i feel so much compassion for animals. just knowing that he could be in pain makes me cry. :(

Poor little guy. I gave them only baby food tonight. squash, apple, and chicken baby food. So he can easily eat. I hope that makes him feel alittle better

Well the good news is-he is eating and acting normally. This probably means he will be okay until you see a vet. Whatever it is, hopefully the vet can take care of it and he will be back to being your best buddy, even if slightly toothless!

He is annoyed with em this today because I have been taking him out of his pouch and looking at him every hour haha. He just wants to go back to sleep with Milo but im too worried. I called the vet she will be returning my call here very shortly. Im hoping she can help me! He ate alll his baby food last night( i watched to make sure he ate in particular) and he is still a chubby glider.

I will let you know how the vet call goes and when they are able to be seen!

Sounds like you are describing an abcessed tooth to me, too. Abcesses are pretty serious if not treated immediately. Glad to hear you are taking him to the vet today. The vet may have to lance it - and it that ever nasty! Poor little guy...

Keep us updated.

Meeko's surgery is scheduled for Friday at 8:30am. She said it will include x ray tooth removal lancing and antibiotics all for a total of 140 dollars!! I think he will have to stay there for the day. She told me to bring my emergency cage with pouches and water and everything.

I will try to capture a photo of it if he will stay still.

hope they do not extract the tooth just because of the abscess. The lancing and antibiotics will take care of the infection and the tooth may not really need to come out. Sometimes they can get an infection around the tooth that causes an abscess but the tooth may not have any decay. We've been through this before. Ask them to inspect the x-ray and confirm decay before they take it out. If after ten days the swelling and infection goes away and the tooth is still there, it may be just an issue of tissue aggravation.

It hasn't grown at all.I have kept a very close eye on him. She didn't mention what to do if he gets worse, if it gets worse I will just call them back and get immediate attention. I hope he can wait until friday! TGI is helping me with the bill thankfully.

I will watch him very carefully. He is awake running around playing. Waiting for me to give him his baby food since thats what Val said to feed him until the surgery.

I hope im doing this right.. I dont know what to do besides listen to the vet!

Keep checking his hydration.... How is he doing?

Worst comes to worst, take him into the vet for sub-q fluids.... Try offering juicy foods like yogurt and applesauce....

I was on the phone and IM with Janae last night until about 12:30. She was giving him pedialyte every three hours per Val and put yogurt in the freezer to get it really cold and he was eating that. We were hoping that the cold soft yogurt might help ease some of the pain. Janae was going to contact the Vet's at 8:00 this morning and try to get him in there today even though the exotic Vet doesn't come in until friday. She was going to try and get some rest between pedialyte feedings and checking on him. I'm sure she was up most of the night. Maybe she will update us soon on how he is doing.

Well. I woke up to a very very big surprise.. the abscess or wound it whatever it was, burst or he ripped it open. He no longer had a lump on his throat? I had to wait until 10 am to even get through to Val because the towers for AT&T and my area were down and no one with AT&T could call anyone! So I cleaned it up with a warm wash cloth and gave him more pedialyte. He was so lively and happy running around and playing. He also pooped on me.. solid baby food colored stools which made me VERY relieved to know he had ate.

He still has his appointment friday morning. Until then the vet told me to give him the Albon suspension and to continue to watch him closely. i put some neosporin on the area even though there is no clear open wound..

He has perked back up 100% though. I took him to visit my mother with me so she could help me hold him while i cleaned him up and gave him pedialyte and he was so antsy to just run around that he just kept running around and jumping from me to her and playing in my hair :)

I think the little guy is going to be ok. I will keep you all posted.

He is in my prayers! Can't your vet see him tomorrow? This sounds like something that needs to be addressed-especially since it is now an open and draining sore.

Is the vet that terribly busy that they can't see him at least to make sure? I am sorry, but I can't believe that the vet is just okay with waiting on an emergency case like this. I pray that she is right and I wish I could just give you and your little boy a big ol' hug and make things better!

He is doing fine! I put him back in the pouch with his brother during the day while i can watch them. He was not pleased to be away from his brother in a seperate cage even though they were inches beside each other.

The area where the lump was looks good. He still has his appointment though :)
