can't figure out the 50/50

Posted by: sugie_gurl
-----
okay, i'll i have to tell the truth here. i really don't own a suger gilder but i've always wanted one. the problem is that i don't have the space and time & it's not fair to me or the animal to put that kind of commitment on. i'm young and it is simply not practical, but that doesn't mean i can't dream about owning one.
i have been doing more research on suggies latley(ever since i finnally got the enternet) and there seem to be a lot of contradictions.
1)Some references say they smell horible; others say the smell isn't that noticable.
2)some sites say their dietry needs are easy to cater to and others say they are expensive becuase it is an exotic animal. which is it!?
3)Some say it is hard to bond sugies and others say it is easy to over a couple of weeks.

these are only of the couple 50/50 questions that have my mind boggled. but right now i have to go. see ya...

P.S. i am soooo glad i found this site!!!!!!!

I think I'm the Grinch who stole christmas

Posted by: grauglider
-----
Ok so ya christmas is comin.......Everytime someone says have a merry christmas or reminds me how close it is I cringe. I feel like the Grinch because I have No presents for anyone. I'm excited about seeing the fam I love them to death always good times. Unless my grama decides to lift up my shirt again in front of everyone to see if my pants fit right. I don't have a dime to my name I'll be lucky if my account is still positive by christmas. The only thing I want is cash so I can pay my bills ever since my fiance took off I've jus been falling farther and farther behind and caring less and less, As the world swallows me in a big dark hole that I can't seem to climb out of. Is it ever going to end it's hard enough that my grama s getting close to dying and my favorite grampa died around christmas. It's just not a good time of the year for me. I'm lonely and I can tell the cats are getting depressed just looking at me I try to act happy around them but they can just tell when I'm hurting inside. How do they know? I'm thankful to have them around though. And the cuddly fur butts of course. My sis has been a savior I've been staying at her house alot and she always has cute guys over so that's nice to just have company and not think about all the baddd stuff. So a few unanswerable questions. How long will this chaos in my life last? When will I feel whole? Have I ever been whole or just part of a whole that was me and Chris. Will I ever not feel like the black sheep of the family because I have let them all down. My Cougar broke down 2 weeks ago. And then I ran over a huge box on the highway and busted the radiator to my grama's car. 1600$ and the cougar is done. So when my dad found out all this he said, "You deserve this for your life decisions, Don't call me don't call the Family your on your own." I was in shock a little but not really he's just angry and miserable and broke. I hate being a burden to everyone but I do thank god for having such a great extended family I don't know what will happen when my grama's gone she's the glue between all of us. She keeps my dad in check. He acts like I chose to tourcher him by wreckin my grama's car. He thinks I stay up late everynight trying to find ways to make his life worse. I just HATE christmas it's like the stick that broke the camels back and I'm the camel. I remember being a kid so happy for christmas to come it was my favorite holiday now it's the worst call me the Grinch I don't care.
I have been having crazy nightmares. I can't stop them and I can't wake up from them. Before, Chris would hear me screaming in my sleep and wake me up. Now I'm just stuck in them screaming and no one is there to get me out of the terror that fills my mind. People ask have you slept lately? Are you OK? What's wrong? God I hate that one, I'm like well lets see um let me get a pen and I'll make a list. I used to sleep at least 10 hours a day now I take naps 4-5 hours long so when I do sleep I sleep so hard that I usually can't dream or just don't remember them I don't know. But then I get to wake up to the nightmare that is my life. I try to sleep during the day so if I do have a nightmare at least it's not all dark and scary when I wake up. I dono how to get out of this rut I don't even know where to begin. I can't handel everything? Any suggestions please post

I weighed Robin today. She was originally at 2.something pounds and is now weighing in at 1.88. So her surgery removed some of that worthless fat; hooray! More to go.

 Ren and Leia sagas

Posted by: Ahsaehr
-----
Ren and Leia fight over food like crazy. It's insane how they do it. Leia will grab a piece of food and run around the cage crabbing until she finds somewhere to eat it so after our vacation I'm going to make her a little room out of an oatmeal container or something and see if that helps.

I'm also putting them on ensure again. I feed them a lot more than I feed Stimpy and Trinity (same foods too). I feed them more because while Leia is going on her crabbing fits she drops a lot of the food, but when I watch they eat all of it. They pull the food through the cracks and eat it. I've never seen a pet gorge themselves so much. Leia and ren will eat so much their belly will be three times the normal size. So I'm going to start giving them ensure since when I did they didn't fight.

I'm going to look for other drinks like ensure with less iron. It seems all the diets (Ensure, BML, maybe HPW) have high iron content in them. I can assume piedasure will have more in it, and it might come down to us having to make some for them. We have wheat germ and I can make something similar to the BML with more natural sugars and less iron (Which is taking out the baby cereal and yogurts). But what would I mix, I know someone went around preaching about wheat germ but that was all pulled out of his butt from what I actually read when i did my own researching.

I'll be sure to post more as I continue on.

Robin the Four Eyed Possum recovers from surgery

Posted by: kazko
-----
Robin went in for surgery this morning. It went well and she was awake and calm when I picked her up. I took a few photos of her but decided to not disturb her to get stitch photos. I can get those later.

Dr said that she ended up with an L shaped stitching after removing the fatty deposits and extra tissue, so that will be interesting to see. I am going to leave her alone for a few days to heal.

She received pain injection and should be good to go in a few days. I do not have an e-collar on her.

I took a few photos of her as she got her first doses of water. She literally drank for over ten minutes. You can see that she still has loose skin around the neck. The vet said that it was too difficult and risky to go up there, but the main area has been cleared and will no longer interfere with her walking, climbing and getting into her pouch.

Her tail is very much larger than the boys which tells me that we still have a lot of fat to burn on her. I will keep this in mind in future feedings and she will also burn some weight faster as I plan on exercising her in a room, tent, ball, larger cage with climbing branches and an exercise wheel if I can manage to make one around 18".

Robin the possum visits the vet

Posted by: kazko
-----
I took the female four eyed possum in for her first vet visit today.
I asked the techs up front for a name for her, and seeing that the boy is named Phil the Philander, they suggested Robin which is the name of Dr Phil's wife. So we now have Phil and Robin for better or worse.

We gassed her in order to inspect her entire body easily. I watched as she became nauseous and threw up a few times when going down.

Body inspection was good. We counted FIVE nipples in the pouch. Fecal float came out clean. Skin scrape determined that she has a very rare mite that opossums get, so we chose a topical dosage of Revolution Selamectin; half on her and half left for Phil.

Vet said that she is healthy other than the reason I took her in. It appears as if this girl had been very obese in her past. Possums round out like any animal will but they also start depositing fatty tissue elsewhere which is the bad here. She has these loose pockets of dangly hanging skin on her chest that have a soft fatty deposit in them called a lipoma. As she is losing weight, they are actually interfering with her being able to walk, so we are having her back in tomorrow morning for surgery; basically a tummy tuck.

I havent been with this vet before and was very happy with the friendly nature and general candor of her and the staff. They were all very interested in learning about the South American Four Eyed Possum. I gave them a crash course on marsupial genitalia and other neat stuff and we talked about all sorts of things while inspecting Robin.

I am anxious to get Robin back to health so I can start to work on her taming.

What the heck is a Four-Eyed Philander Possum?

/glidergossip/Photos/2571/tn/tn_DSC00794.jpg
A philander possum has a range that extends from Northeastern Mexico to Southeatern Brazil. Within this range, it may be found from Brazil's Atlantic coast westward into Peru and Argentenia, as well as throughout Central America.

/glidergossip/Photos/2571/tn/tn_DSC00789.jpg The common name is derived from this opossum's grey coat and the single white spots which are located directly above each eye, providing it with an appearance of four eyes.

/glidergossip/Photos/2571/tn/tn_DSC00772.jpgThe body length is 250-350 mm, and the tail reaches to about the same length. Males may be slightly larger than females, although much overlap in size is present. Females have five to nine mammae contained within a pouch.

/glidergossip/Photos/2571/tn/tn_DSC00771.jpg The coloration of the short, straight hair is gray dorsally and off-white to yellow ventrally. The tail is furred with the same gray coloration for 50-60 mm from the base. The tip of the tail is naked and becomes paler in color towards its end.

The ears are naked as well.

/glidergossip/Photos/2571/tn/tn_DSC00804.jpgPhilander opossum has a slender body and a large head. Its rostrum is fairly long and narrows at the tip. The tail tapers as well, and it is prehensile. The hind limbs are longer and more muscular than the forelimbs.

Website is now running on new hardware

Posted by: kazko

We have finally finished the migration of websites to the new servers. Database access should now be faster than it has ever been and we have lots of room to expand.

The ups and batteries are in, servers are all hung and running, tape drive is installed, network links are teamed and trunked, things are migrated and stable and all is well.

The new servers are all Dell data center boxes. Just one of them has 4 cores and 12ghz of processing power. I am still amazed at what we can and will soon be doing with these.

Hangin' at the Hut & Joey Worries

Posted by: The Flying Phelange
-----
The young girls are still hanging out in the jungle hut during the night. There's still alot of barking, so maybe one or even both are in heat right now. Last night, I would hear the barking, and then crabbing from the sleeping pouch. They went back and forth like that for a good long while. Then they settled down. The girls are back in the regular sleeping pouch again this morning.

I'm also a little worried because we haven't seen the new joey in a few days. But then, I haven't peeked in the pouch lately either. I don't like doing that because I don't want to stress them out too much. Last time my son thinks he saw it, he said the mom had it in her mouth at the nectar dish. It was dark, and he didn't turn on the light. What has me worried is that all 6 were out to eat at the same time for the past two nights. Since the joey has been OOP, one always stayed in the pouch while the rest ate. I'm assuming it was baby-sitting. Hopefully, it's just that the joey is getting a little older so they will leave it alone for short periods. It's about 3 weeks OOP right now.

 Feeling discouraged

Posted by: prdycool

After reading the posts about glider introductions I am wondering if things will work out for Scuttle (new guy). I have the cages side by side because I literally can't put them anywhere else (I only have the one room here at school). Al is still crabbing and fighting through the bars with him (when he is out). Dezi doesn't seem to mind having two boys around, but is scared by the way Al is acting (frantically marking everything and lunging out at her when they are loose. He doesn't actually hurt her but they smell the other one and are nervous and never sure who is who). I was planning to get Scuttle neutered over Christmas break and then trying to introduce them. From the sound of the posts it doesn't seem likely to work. This means I will have to find him a friend elsewhere and have two cages in one room which really isn't working out. I hope I don't have to give him away again. He's been to so many homes and given away so many times and that's why I wanted to keep him and give him a stable home. I guess I will get him neutered either way and figure out what to do if I can't integrate the two cages. I just wanted them to be a big happy family. :(
